PC Monitor Detects Posture, Distance

A new computer monitor developed by Philips will not only tell you if you’re sitting too close, but will correct posture and recommend coffee breaks as well.

The latest innovation from the Dutch electronics corporation uses a patented ErgoSensor monitor to detect a range of motion to correct posture and monitor how close the user is sitting. “If the user is a little too close or too far away from the monitor, a pop-up message will appear in the bottom right side of the monitor, similar to receiving a new email,” said Philips Multimedia Displays Product Manager Jeroen Brants.

It will also sense if your neck is not straight or if you are blinking less than usual, which could indicate you have been using the computer for too long and need a rest. The device will also shut off automatically to conserve energy when it’s not being used.

While users could find constant reminders to remain within the “optimal ergonomic zone” a bit annoying, the device does have a setting to turn off the alerts. Although some have likened it to the Microsoft Office Assistant program – which was notorious for its overly helpful Clippy character – feedback from testers has been positive overall.

The ErgoSensor is currently on show at the IFA, an electronics trade fair in Berlin, and will go on sale in Europe in December.
