U.S. Pledges to Send Aid to North Korean Flood Victims

In the wake of devastating floods, the United States pledged to send $900,000 of emergency aid to North Korea in addition to the $300,000 pledged earlier in the month, according to the U.S. State Department Thursday.

The U.S. will be distributing plastic sheeting, tents and other housing relief to North Korea’s Kangwon and Hwanghau provinces through nongovernmental relief organizations. Food aid is not expected to be among the relief packages, as a fact-finding mission in May did not yield enough transparency for the U.S. to consider heeding the nation’s request.

“We are working now, using the New York channel, to ensure that if we go forward with that, that the assistance that we render meets the concrete needs of the North Korean people and will be used properly,” said Victoria Nuland, a spokeswoman for the State Department.

Dialogue between the two nations resumed in New York last month, which were described as “exploratory” in regard to resuming nuclearization negotiations.

South Korea also announced that it will deliver 5 billion won, the equivalent of $4.7 million, in medical aid and goods through the Korean Red Cross. Although there has been tension between North and South Korea since attacks in the northern region killed 50 South Koreans, this gesture is being viewed as peaceful on the part of President Lee Myung-Bak’s administration.
