On Tuesday the World Health Organization (WHO) released a report indicating a possible link between mobile phone use and cancer. According to the classification system used by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), the radio and electromagnetic fields emitted by mobile devices are “possibly” carcinogenic to humans. Experts have concluded that the subject needs more research to determine the risk more clearly.
The eight-day research session conducted by IARC in Lyon, France included a look back at all previously published scientific literature on the subject.
Many health advocates expressed their appreciation of the announcement in hopes that it will spur more research on potential risks, including cell phones’ impact on those who use the devices more frequently, and on children. Worldwide, about five billion people currently use mobile phones.
