The Business of Brightness

Without the business of lighting, the world would be in a “dark age,” at least after sunset each evening. For Billy Hodges, president of Digital Filaments LLC, the business of lighting is one that is equal parts science and art – and he sheds some light on why.

“It is a consideration that really everyone should try to balance when they are dealing with lighting,” Hodges, who began his career as a lighting designer, told The Suit Magazine.

“While most people take lighting for granted, at the design level it involves creating that balance between the design and the visions of an architect, with lighting solutions that work in the aesthetics of a space and also fit within its technical requirements,” Hodges added.

For Digital Filaments, there is a business side of  illuminating which is involved as well. The firm, which serves the greater Philadelphia, southern New Jersey and eastern Pennsylvania regions, is also involved in sales and brokering roles. The company now supplies packages of lights from multiple manufacturers and local wholesalers to a variety of end users.

Hodges launched his firm two years ago, at a time that can best be described as the modern “enlightenment” of lighting, when the century-old incandescent began to fade, becoming replaced by newer, even brighter and energy-saving technologies.

It is this technology – the Light Emitting Diode (LED) – that Hodges said will shine a path to the future for his business and beyond. LED, when paired with sophisticated, intelligent lighting control systems, can even be utilized on a municipal level.

“The LED is becoming more affordable, more practical and is being accepted daily for projects,” he added. “At the same time the technology for lighting controls has developed to a similar point.”

“The incandescent is really just a decorative heater at this point,” said Hodges, adding that his firm now represents 75 lighting brands, of which 98 percent are LED or LED-related. “It is a major component of what we do. Even our name is a play on the old incandescent filament along with the new role of LED lighting.”
