Ledger debuts new crypto wallet at CES Touts mobility without sacrificing security

French blockchain startup Ledger recently unveiled a new cryptocurrency hardware wallet that features mobile connectivity and capacity for six times the currencies as previous iterations.

“With its Bluetooth connectability and increased capacity, the Ledger Nano X provides an enhanced user experience while delivering the mobility and state-of-the-art security that customers expect from Ledger,” chief executive officer Larchevêque said in a news release published during the Consumer Electronics Show 2019. “It is exciting to be recognized by CES as the go-to leader for securing crypto assets.”

The Ledger Nano X provides enhanced functionality over the Ledger Nano S. The Nano X features Bluetooth connectivity, which means users can conduct transactions, manage additional apps, and check real-time balances from their phones. The accompanying Ledger Live Mobile application, which users control the wallet with, will be made available in the Apple App Store and Google Play on January 28th.

The Nano S could store fewer than 20 different crypto assets, which the Nano X increases by a factor of six. The Nano X can store 100 crypto assets and includes what Ledger describes as an improved interface. The device also provides robust security features which isolate private keys from users’ easily hackable smartphones and computes. Private keys represent crypto asset ownership, so protecting them is crucial, and the Nano X does so using hardware rather than less safe cloud storage or exchange methods. The Ledger Nano X also supports more than 1,100 cryptocurrencies, meaning users can check their accounts, as well as send and receive cryptocurrency payments from anywhere.

The device made such as impact at CES that it was awarded the CES Innovation Award in Cyber Security and Personal Privacy for 2019, the firm’s news release stated. The CES Innovation Awards honor outstanding design and engineering in consumer technology products that protect and enhance digital security.

“As global data-ization continues to change people’s lives, users are looking for trusted partners to protect their critical digital assets,” said Pascal Gauthier, Ledger’s president. “At Ledger, we offer customers a way to secure these assets, through our state-of-the-art technology. With the Ledger Nano X, we are delivering increased security, along with improved access through the new Ledger Live mobile app.”
