AT&T Limits Data Usage for Users

Heavy data users will soon face charges from AT&T in their newest grandfathered data plan. Clogging the airways with excessive usage of the iPhone, iPad and smartphone data capabilities will soon result in charges for customers in the top 5 percent of data usage, the company said in a statement Friday.

The measure will take effect Oct. 1 in order to alleviate network congestion. Last year, AT&T stopped signing up users for “unlimited” data plans and now charge customers who exceed a certain threshold. The Dallas-based company says they will send a warning to customers who are close to reaching their monthly data allotment.

AT&T said the charge only applies to those who use data through the wireless network, so customers connecting to the web via a Wi-Fi connection will not have browsing count toward their monthly limit. The company said what generally puts heavy users over the edge is “streaming very large amounts of video and music daily,” as well as playing online games. Therefore, it would take a lot of online activity to near the cap.

T-Mobile already had a measure like this in effect, charging users who went over the 250MB of monthly data usage a fee of $0.20/MB. However, in April 2010, they lowered the rate to $0.10/MB.
