Implications of Lapses in Cyber Security

Since 2017 began, the global cyberspace has been buzzing with news related to new cyber regulation laws and amendments that are being proposed by governments throughout the world.

Though it is no secret that many governments and monitoring agencies spy on users for their browsing activities, it is now gradually becoming legal. Soon, governments will be legally capable to ask ISPs for providing browsing information of a particular user or region. This has given online users yet another reason to opt for online privacy and anonymity so as to avoid their personal data from being logged on ISP servers.

Online security is not only restricted to our online activities on your computers and smartphones – it expands far beyond that. The Internet of Things (IoT) has been a topic of debate for many online security experts since it became mainstream in 2013. While IoT is revamping how people live, communicate and work, it is also dramatically modifying the way operation and strategic security decisions are taken. It is expected that by the year 2020, more than 20 billion IoT devices will be connected to the internet. This estimate alone poses one of the most serious security threat that mankind has ever faced in the history of online security and privacy.

Here is the biggest concern facing IoT, what if all of your smart home devices, such as smart door locks, smart surveillance camera, HVAC systems, and streaming devices, get compromised at the hands of a hacker? The door which previously unlocked when you tapped your phone would no longer respond, and you may get stuck in a room for as long as you regain access to your smart locks. You may no longer be able to see if the person, whose silhouette you can see in the window, is a stranger or a friend. Even worse, your HVAC system may start cooling your home on a winter night, which can be lethal, if not fatal.

There are more implications to data breaches in IoT than you may think. Imagine a person suffering from a rare medical condition that he does not like to share with anyone and chooses to be discreet about it. However, he repeatedly sees popup ads and gets spam emails related to medical products that can help cure his condition. Such a person may feel very vulnerable and may even get depressed, thinking that the internet knows what disease he is suffering from.

Based on the above mentioned cases, we are all headed for an apocalypse, unless we utilize the time we have right now to take measures that can ensure that our online privacy and security remains impenetrable. One of the most common ways of securing your online activities is by using a VPN, such as Business VPN. A VPN can protect you against almost all online threats my making you invisible on the web and concealing your identity. If no one knows you are there on the web, no one can attack you.

Those people who have many smart devices installed at their homes and office should take extra precaution and must use a VPN service to ensure that their communication, transactions and online data remains hidden from malicious users. Meanwhile, those users who use the internet for casual purposes, such as using social media or streaming videos may have noticed that a small chunk of internet lies outside their access due to geo-restrictions that have been placed by some countries. To access geo-restricted content, and not be penalized or noticed, you would need to put your resources and thoughts together to find the best VPN for Kodi.

It’s high time for everyone to step up their privacy game. There is no point in having password protected smart devices and computers if any data sent or received by them can be easily intercepted, retrieved and stored.
