The Financial Doctor is in

Creating an income stream that lasts a lifetime isn’t accomplished without significant planning. In Charlotte A. Dougherty’s professional experience, it also takes a written plan that guides both the financial advisor and the investing client.

Her associates – Director of Financial Planning Andrew Tedesco and Director of Wealth Management John Dougherty III – follow the same protocol in using written plans as the basis for helping their clients.

“The written plan is the foundation,” Dougherty said. “It is the underpinning of knowledge of where the client is now, and then also a projection of where the client wants to go with the ‘what ifs’ incorporated.”

As president of Dougherty Associates, based in Cincinnati, Ohio, she has more than 20 years of experience in financial, investment and retirement planning. To Dougherty, these written plans provide a sound basis for working as a financial doctor – performing “wealth checks,” similar to the “health checks” encouraged by medical doctors.

Looking back at past data in comparison against current standing gives Dougherty the ability to measure and review progress. This is a key to unlocking the positive reinforcement she likes giving clients to help keep them on track toward their goals.

Her clients are executive, managers and professionals who have realized some success in their lives and are insightful enough to know that they need professional help to manage the economic side of their successes.

“These people are good at what they do and they respect others, such as us, for being successful at working hard to make their financial lives easier and for helping them to remain focused on achieving their desired results,” Dougherty said. “We dedicate ourselves to helping our clients grow their wealth, protecting themselves and their families from random events that wreak havoc and interfere with achieving goals for retirement, for family and for legacy.”

Dougherty and her team of financial planning professionals make this happen through a combination of best practices. Using proper asset allocation backed by knowledge and data, she builds a strategy that provides each client with the benefit of broad diversification. She also acknowledges the client’s goals in terms of wealth accumulation and preservation in a manner aligning with that client’s risk tolerance. Seeing fees as “a headwind” for performance in building net worth, Dougherty diligently screens expenses to verify that they are justifiable and serving the best interests of her client. Education ties these efforts together. Dougherty, who loved playing schoolteacher as a child, now takes that role into the financial realm. She talks to clients about diligent fact-checking before making financial decisions, educating them regarding the tax consequences of their choices, as well as teaching them about risk management.

In the end, of course, Dougherty wants her clients to trust her advice. But she doesn’t want them to do it blindly. Her desire for educated clients with whom she can partner in guiding their financial efforts for both today and tomorrow provides a driving force that steers the extra educational effort she believes in and values.

“It is rewarding to know that we have been able to make a real difference in people’s lives over time,” Dougherty said. “My greatest success has been building a practice that is focused on helping people feel good about their financial positions and their financial futures.”
