Embracing the Facts

In 1994, The London Company started as a one-man operation, with Stephen Goddard serving as an advisor to a publicly traded life insurance company. Through strategic and methodical growth, the Richmond, Virginia-based firm now has 31 employees with $22.2 billion in assets under advisement as of 6/30/2015.

As a majority employee-owned investment advisory firm focused on managing long-term equity portfolios, The London Company embraces a fact-driven process over the more common speculative approach used widely in the financial investment industry.

“Instead of trying to project future growth rates of Microsoft or IBM or other companies, we look at what the company has under their control today that they can do to create value – whether it be through the balance sheet, cap allocation, or spinning off certain divisions or non-core assets. We focus more on that than we do on trying to guess what the next quarter or next five-year growth rate is going to be for a company,” explained Goddard, who is still at the helm of The London Company, serving as managing principal.

In addition to a conservative long-term approach, the guiding principles of The London Company include a focus on downside protection, a single investment process across all strategies and a research-driven approach using their proprietary Balance Sheet Optimization. With a global client base – including institutional, high net worth and sub-advisory investors – their goal is to maximize investor return and minimize any potential loss.

The London Company has grown some 35 percent annually since the firm’s inception 21 years ago. Goddard points to the same philosophy the firm uses in managing their client portfolios – avoiding speculation.

“As a company, we don’t try to predict where we are going to be three-to-five years from now. We try to lower the risk of our firm as much as we can control, and make sure we can weather a downturn or any other type of risk,” Goddard said.
